THE VISION

This beachfront luxury penthouse was designed to embrace both sophistication and tranquillity, with expansive floor plans that flow seamlessly to create a sense of openness. The panoramic ocean views were a key inspiration, with large glass windows and glass doors that connect the interior to the horizon, allowing natural light to flood the space.

Neutral tones of sand, cream, and intense blues were chosen to evoke a serene coastal feel, while high-end materials like automated curtains and blinds, rich woods, leather and fabrics bring an elevated sense of elegance. The furniture and décor focus on sleek, contemporary lines with subtle touches of luxury, balancing modernity with comfort for an ideal vacation retreat. Custom pieces of art and sculptural, functional elements were incorporated to enhance the artistic atmosphere, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding environment.

The commissioned artwork curated by Franklin Markram was chosen to reflect the modern style of the client. One piece was inspired by an art installation in a New York high-end fashion magazine's editorial offices. The use of bold wallpapers accentuated areas that filled the visual acuity of large wall spaces and muted the brightness of the ocean-facing walls. This second home by the ocean is a haven of relaxation, blending sophisticated design with the calming energy of the sea.

LOCATION

The coastal location of the penthouse deeply influenced my design choices by inspiring a connection between the interior and the natural beauty of the surrounding environment

I chose light, airy materials and neutral colour palettes with gold inserts to reflect the sand, sea, and sky, creating a seamless flow between the indoors and outdoors. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows in the architecture allowed unobstructed views of the ocean, while also enhancing natural light throughout the space.

I incorporated elements of dark solid wood to evoke the raw beauty of the coastline while adding warmth and texture to the space.

The design also embraces open, airy layouts to foster a sense of freedom and relaxation, allowing the sound of the waves and the sea breeze to become part of the living experience.

PALETTE

The calm, tonal textures and layering were central to creating a peaceful and luxurious atmosphere that reflects the serene nature of a coastal retreat. Soft, muted hues like sand, ivory, and blues,  and woods were layered across fabrics, from plush rugs to velvet cushions, creating a gentle, harmonious flow throughout the space.

The textures themselves—solid wood dining table, tactile woven throws, and rich linen upholstery—invite the senses to experience both visual and tactile calm.

Layering materials like soft wool, silk, and natural wood ensures depth and warmth without overwhelming the space, allowing each element to subtly complement the next.

The layering of tones and textures mirrors the natural shifts of the sea and sky, ensuring the design feels effortlessly integrated with its coastal surroundings, fostering relaxation and a timeless sense of tranquillity.

STRICKING A BALANCE BETWEEN MINIMALISM AND WARMTH

Striking a balance between minimalism and warmth in a luxury coastal penthouse involves carefully selecting pieces that offer simplicity without sacrificing comfort. The minimalist approach is reflected in the clean lines and open spaces, with an emphasis on functional design that avoids unnecessary clutter.

The living area is the focus of this penthouse and we created separate areas within this large space where each area has a different use.

Warmth is introduced through natural materials like rich timber, soft textiles, and tactile finishes, which invite relaxation and create a welcoming atmosphere.

Thoughtful touches such as plush rugs, soft leather seating, and natural wood accents add texture and depth while maintaining a streamlined aesthetic. By focusing on quality over quantity—choosing fewer, high-impact statement pieces like a beautifully crafted dining table, a drinks cabinet and discreet sculptural art—the space feels both curated and inviting, offering luxury without excess.

The beds were chosen to be higher with dramatic headboards so that one can relax in bed while watching the ocean and drinking a warm cup of coffee.

This thoughtful interplay between simplicity and coziness ensures the space feels both expansive and intimate.

THE GOAL

When someone walks into this beachfront penthouse, the goal is to evoke a sense of awe, calm, and effortless luxury. The expansive layout and stunning ocean views should immediately make them feel a connection to the natural beauty outside, fostering a deep sense of tranquillity and escape. The serene, harmonious design invites them to unwind, offering a space that feels both elevated and grounded—luxurious but not pretentious.

The beds are dressed with luxurious linens that cocoons you when you get into bed and even just by looking at them, they feel comfortable.

The warmth of the materials and the careful attention to detail should make them feel welcomed and embraced, as though they've entered a personal sanctuary that encourages relaxation and reflection. Ultimately, the experience should be one of seamless flow—where the indoors meet the outdoors, and every corner feels like an invitation to linger and enjoy the beauty of life by the ocean.
