When designing a home office, it is important to consider the purpose for which the space will be used. Whether it's a designated space for a home business, a remote workstation, or simply a corner for paying bills, the space should reflect the design and comfort of your home.

Location is key

Think about when and where you do your work. Are you a professional? Do you need a quiet, private space away from the distraction of the household, or a busy mom where a nook close to the kitchen would be more suitable?

Make enough space

Consider workflow, desk, shelves, and storage space requirements. Is there enough space to work comfortably and move freely? The rule of thumb for a workstation is 150cm wide by 210cm deep.

Selecting a desk and chair

You spend hours sitting at your desk. Choosing the right desk and chair is essential. Investing in a beautifully designed ergonomic chair is worth every cent.

Select a desk that is wide enough for your computer as well as anything else you need close by while working.

Let the light in

Ideally, situate your desk in a space with good natural light and preferably with a view. Consider overcast days and night-time work. Where do you require shadow-free task lighting?

Translucent window shades or blinds can help reduce any glare without darkening your room.

An overhead ceiling light will provide good general lighting. If you don't have good natural light, keep your walls light.

Consider your technology

Nothing makes a home office look more unsightly than wires hanging from, or lying on your desk. Organize your space so that wires are close to plug points where possible. Add a grommet to neaten up wires and lead them under your desk and use a cord tamer to avoid a tangled mess. Use wireless equipment wherever possible, especially your keyboard and mouse.

Have fun and personalize

It's your workspace, make it yours. What inspires and motivates you? What makes you comfortable and happy? Incorporate personal items such as a beautifully framed family photograph or a favourite piece of art.

Make your office a space where you want to spend time and you are inspired to produce great work.

Draw a floor plan

When it comes to design, nothing beats pre-planning. A floor plan is an excellent tool to gather your thoughts and ensure you have covered all your bases.

I almost always draw a 3D render of a room before I commence with the project. It saves time, money every time.
